What's The Difference Between A Main Line Leak And A Lateral Line Leak?
Understanding where the leak occurs helps explain why some leaks continue even when the sprinkler system is off.
Main Line Leak
A main line leak occurs before the sprinkler valves. Because the main line is under constant water pressure, it can leak 24 hours a day, even when your controller is turned off and no sprinkler zones are running.
Lateral Line Leak
A lateral line leak occurs after the sprinkler valve. These leaks typically only appear while the affected sprinkler zone is actively watering. This is one of the most common misconceptions homeowners have—and one of the first things we determine during the Whale Done Assessment™.
Common Reasons Your Sprinkler Leaks While The System Is Off
1. Main Line Leak (Most Common)
If water is bubbling up from the ground, creating a soggy area, or flowing continuously while your sprinkler controller is off, a damaged main line is often the cause.
Main line leaks may result from:
- tree root intrusion, shifting soil, aging PVC pipe, freeze damage and accidental damage from digging or landscaping
Because the pipe remains under pressure, these leaks continue until the irrigation water supply is shut off or the pipe is repaired.
2. Valve Not Closing Completely
Small pieces of sand, debris, or other material can prevent a sprinkler valve from sealing properly.
Even a tiny obstruction can allow water to continue flowing through the system after watering has ended.
3. Damaged Valve Diaphragm
Inside every sprinkler valve is a rubber diaphragm that controls water flow.
Over time it can wear out, tear, or become damaged, allowing water to pass even when the valve should be closed.
4. Faulty Master Valve
Some irrigation systems include a master valve designed to stop water from entering the sprinkler system between watering cycles.
If the master valve fails, water may continue flowing through parts of the system.
5. Normal Low-Head Drainage
Not every drip is a problem.
If one or two sprinkler heads release a small amount of water immediately after the watering cycle ends and stop within a few minutes, that’s usually normal.
This is called low-head drainage and is caused by water naturally draining from the lowest sprinkler heads in the system.
